Tokenomics Glossary
A comprehensive guide to tokenomics terminology — from vesting schedules and cliff unlocks to supply metrics and DeFi concepts.
Supply Metrics
Circulating Supply
Supply MetricsThe number of tokens currently available in the open market and held by the public.
Fully Diluted Valuation (FDV)
Supply MetricsThe theoretical market capitalization if all tokens (including locked and unvested) were in circulation at the current price.
Max Supply
Supply MetricsThe maximum number of tokens that will ever exist for a given cryptocurrency.
Total Supply
Supply MetricsThe total number of tokens that currently exist, including locked and reserved tokens.
Vesting & Unlocks
Cliff Period
Vesting & UnlocksAn initial waiting period before any vested tokens begin to unlock.
Cliff Unlock
Vesting & UnlocksA large batch of tokens released all at once at the end of a cliff period.
Linear Vesting
Vesting & UnlocksA vesting model where tokens are released in equal amounts at regular intervals over a set period.
Token Generation Event (TGE)
Vesting & UnlocksThe moment when a project's tokens are first created and distributed, typically coinciding with the token's public launch.
Token Unlock
Vesting & UnlocksThe event when previously locked tokens become available for trading or transfer.
Token Vesting
Vesting & UnlocksA mechanism that gradually releases tokens to holders over a predefined schedule rather than all at once.
Unlock Schedule
Vesting & UnlocksA timeline defining when and how many locked tokens will be released into circulation.
Token Distribution
Airdrop
Token DistributionA distribution method where tokens are sent for free to wallet addresses, typically to reward early users or promote adoption.
Community Allocation
Token DistributionTokens reserved for community incentives such as airdrops, rewards, grants, and ecosystem growth.
Investor Tokens
Token DistributionTokens allocated to early investors who funded the project during seed, private, or public sale rounds.
Private Sale
Token DistributionA fundraising round conducted after the seed stage, selling tokens to select investors at a discount before public availability.
Public Sale
Token DistributionA fundraising event where tokens are offered to the general public, often via an IDO or IEO, at a price close to listing.
Seed Round
Token DistributionThe earliest fundraising stage where a project sells tokens at the lowest price to initial backers.
Team Tokens
Token DistributionTokens allocated to a project's founding team and employees, usually subject to long vesting periods.
Token Allocation
Token DistributionThe distribution plan that defines how a token's total supply is divided among different stakeholder groups.
Treasury
Token DistributionA pool of tokens held by a project or DAO for funding development, partnerships, and ecosystem growth.
Market Metrics
Market Capitalization
Market MetricsThe total market value of a token's circulating supply, calculated as price multiplied by circulating supply.
Token Price Impact
Market MetricsThe effect that token unlocks and supply changes have on a token's market price.
Trading Volume
Market MetricsThe total value of tokens traded within a specific time period, typically measured over 24 hours.
Token Economics
Deflation
Token EconomicsA decrease in the total or circulating supply of tokens, typically achieved through token burn mechanisms.
Emission Schedule
Token EconomicsThe predefined plan for how new tokens are created and distributed over time.
Inflation Rate
Token EconomicsThe rate at which new tokens are created and added to the circulating supply over a given period.
Staking Rewards
Token EconomicsToken incentives earned by holders who lock their tokens to support network security or protocol operations.
Token Burn
Token EconomicsThe permanent removal of tokens from circulation by sending them to an inaccessible wallet address.
Tokenomics
Token EconomicsThe economic design and policies governing a cryptocurrency's supply, distribution, utility, and incentive mechanisms.
